TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 296/1986
By M H Rodwell and S M Evans
Background
This report describes a microcomputer program called PREHEAT which gives guidance on the prevention of heat affected zone (HAZ) hydrogen cracking. The program has been designed and implemented on an IBM Personal Computer. It applies to carbon and carbon manganese steels having carbon equivalents within the range 0.32 to 0.60, and is based on documents published by The Welding Institute and the British Standards Institution. The function of the program is to calculate viable combinations of workpiece preheat temperature, arc energy of the welding procedure, carbon equivalent of the parent material and hydrogen level of the deposit which should prevent HAZ hydrogen cracking.
