Thermal sprayed coatings offer an attractive and cost-effective solution for many industrial wear problems. The high velocity oxyfuel (HVOF) process is a more recent thermal spraying process that is becoming established as a competitive technique for depositing high quality metallic and cermet coatings.
Background
There is, however, very little data available on its ability to deposit ceramic coatings. This work has examined the spraying of alumina and alumina-titania ceramic coatings using the HVOF process.
Objectives
- To determine if the HVOF thermal spraying process can be used to prepare high quality alumina-based ceramic coatings.
- To measure the abrasive wear, erosive wear and protection against aqueous corrosion given by the prepared coatings.
- To examine the influence of fuel gas type and titania content on the performance of HVOF sprayed alumina coatings.
