Artificial Intelligence in NDT

Artificial intelligence (AI) has found a number of applications within non-destructive testing (NDT), including automating data analysis for enhanced inspections, improved detection and characterisation of defects, and machine learning solutions for predictive maintenance and structural integrity.

The AI analysis of vast datasets from ultrasonic testing, radiography, thermography and other NDT solutions can reduce human error while improving efficiency and accuracy. This ability to accurately analyse and cross-reference large amounts of data has also opened up new insights into materials and structural integrity. As well as improved operational efficiencies, AI in NDT leads to improved safety and prolonged asset life for a range of industries.

Example applications for AI in NDT include the assisted analysis of X-ray images to detect flaws in welded joints, processing structural health monitoring data from sensors and tests to provide a comprehensive asset assessment, and ensuring the safety and reliability of components for critical applications in industries such as aerospace and power.

Core Research Programme (CRP) and Joint Industry Projects (JIP)

Core Research

Each year the TWI Core Research Programme (CRP) addresses challenges on behalf of our Industrial Members as well as developing specific technologies and processes. Each of the projects under the CRP is focussed on engineering, materials or manufacturing technologies.

Joint Industry Projects

TWI also conducts Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) that bring together groups of Industrial Members to share the cost of research activities in areas of mutual industrial interest, gaining exclusive access to the outcomes. These projects cover a broad range of topics.

AI-based NDT Solutions

AI offers a number of NDT enhancements and solutions for industry, including:

  • Automated Data Analysis: AI can rapidly analyse large amounts of complex inspection data to identify patterns and anomalies that may be missed by humans
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: The ability to analyse both new and historical data allows AI to assist with information-based decision-making for inspection schedules and quality assurance
  • Enhanced and Improved Defect Detection: AI can both enhance and improve NDT processes through faster defect recognition, location and characterisation while minimising human error to deliver consistent and reliable inspection results
  • Informed Predictive Maintenance: AI can also provide predictive analytics to support predictive maintenance operations, forecasting potential equipment failures to prevent costly outages and equipment repair / replacement

AI in NDT at TWI

Our experts provide TWI Industrial Members with support and guidance in the use of machine learning and AI in NDT, including applying artificial intelligence (AI)-based, machine learning algorithms to derive efficiencies from large volume data, optimise the quality of anomaly prediction, failure detection, asset management, and other applications.

Examples include:

  • AI for NDT data analysis and asset integrity management
  • AI-assisted welding defect detection
  • Robotic inspection
  • Machine learning and AI for path planning and automation

In addition, we have expertise in the integration of robotic technologies into multiple areas with the application of advanced, adaptable and autonomous robotics such as drones, mobile robots and manipulators capable of performing tasks with minimum human supervision, as well as machine learning from human-to-machine interaction.

AI is streamlining NDT across industry, opening up new opportunities for engineers in data analysis, while improving efficiencies and safety. The technical excellence of TWI’s experts can help you make the most of this constantly-evolving technology in your own operations.
