Alert: Export Control Check Required
Thank you for requesting a TWI Industrial Members Report.
To meet UK government requirements, your request will undergo an Export Control Check. This process reviews the technical content of the report, identifies the end user, and addresses any concerns.
Please submit your request to CRP@twi.co.uk including your name, member company that you work for and your location. We will contact you regarding the request within 2 working days and any additional information required to complete the necessary checks.
We look forward to receiving your request and processing it through our export control procedure.
Thank you,
TWI CRP Operations Team
Orbital friction welds have been produced in 25mm diameter carbon manganese steel (O.l9%C, 1.5%Mn) to determine the effect of process parameters on weld impact and metallurgical properties. Sound welds were produced over a wide range of welding conditions and high impact energies were also achieved by the use of high burn-off rates, and increased deceleration times. Fracture deviation was noted for welds with narrow heat affected zones when the notch was located near the periphery of the bar. Other notch locations have been identified which restrict or eliminate fracture deviation. Sound welds were also produced in a 0.14% carbon manganese steel and a low alloy steel. These steels could yield acceptable impact properties dependent on the welding and parent steel conditions.
