Background
The joint classification system in fatigue design rules for welded joints (e. g. BS 5400, Part 10) is based upon the results of experimental fatigue tests. However, some types of joint are not covered by the existing rules because of the lack of relevant results. In this work two such joints have been studied:
(a) a transverse K butt weld with the stressed plate less wide than the 'through' plate, but with no fillet weld around the edges of the stressed plate;
(b) a longitudinal edge attachment with the end fillet (i .e. the corner of the attachment) ground to a radius instead of being left as-welded.
