Research Programmes

TWI undertakes research and development across a wide range of technologies and industry sectors on behalf of and alongside our Industrial Members. This is mainly carried out in three types of project:

Core Research Programme Projects

Core Research Programme (CRP) projects comprise a market-driven, annual, rolling programme of research and development (R&D) activities that serve to underpin the creation and optimisation of new capabilities, products and services, systems and processes in joining, materials and engineering technologies, to the benefit of TWI and  its Industrial Membership base.  Projects are selected that address the future requirements of industry by investigating specific, identified challenges being experience by TWI and its Industrial Members in a broad range of sectors involving different engineering-based technologies.

Core Research Programme (CRP) projects are delivered with a contribution of up to 50% from TWI Industrial Membership subscriptions, with the in-depth reports that detail the technical R&D work undertaken within the projects being made available exclusively to TWI Industrial Member companies only, as Industrial Member Reports.

However, in order to extend some of the knowledge and innovation out to wider industry, CRP Report Abstracts; derived from the full reports, and CRP Executive Summaries; produced at the start of a new CRP project, are publicly available.

Joint Industry Projects

These are funded by a group of Industrial Members with a shared interest in the outcomes of the project. Sponsors are able to guide the project and leverage their funding to gain access to a larger body of research.

Public Funded Projects

These are carried out by a consortium of organisations with the support of public funding. TWI collaborates with partners to achieve gearing of its own resources and to gain access to expertise and equipment, in order to develop new capabilities, products and services.

Exploratory Programme Projects

The projects in the Exploratory Programme are funded by TWI, and carried out by technical staff in TWI’s Technology Sections, Innovations Centres and global offices. The programme has a clear focus on creating opportunities that will provide returns for TWI in the longer term and support the development of TWI’s Global Technology Plan.
