TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 319/1986
By G J Carter
Background
The project has examined variables affecting fume emission during manual metal arc (MMA) welding with emphasis on the effect of electrode formulation on fume emission rate and composition. The overall aim has been to define important factors in the design of consumables providing reduced emission rate and fume toxicity. Following earlier work on the welding of steel using rutile consumables, the present report describes studies relating specifically to basic consumables.
