TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 318/1986
By N Bailey
Background
Previous investigations at The Welding Institute had shown that metal powder additions during submerged-arc welding gave opportunities not merely to improve efficiency during submerged-arc welding but also to control weld metal structures. In the present investigation, the opportunity was, therefore, taken, to examine the effects on welding efficiency and weldment toughness of metal powders added during multiarc two-pass and multipass submerged-arc welding of C-Mn-Nb structural steel of the type used for offshore and pressure vessel applications. Alloyed metal powders were used to control weld metal compositions, microstructure and toughness. Toughness of the HAZ was also examined.
