TWI has decades of experience in providing support to the defence industry, both through our work alongside the Ministry of Defence and with our Industrial Member companies in this sector.
Of course, much of the work in this sector is sensitive and TWI undertakes defence research and development in strict confidence.
As a leader in materials and structural failure avoidance we recognise that these are critical to the defence sector. We are innovative with flexible laboratories, providing technologies that give competitive advantage in new materials solutions for high performance structures; coatings, polymers and composites; powder manufacture; robotic, integrated and transformational manufacture and inspection; integrity against combined failure modes and predicting performance via modelling and simulation.
TWI Defence Capabilities
Our services help the Ministry of Defence deliver their national security agenda by working with some of the biggest names in the sector. Our experience covers military resources related to marine, air and land deployment, including joining technologies for military vehicles and combat equipment. This assistance has included additive manufacturing, welding and joining, ceramics, surface engineering, non-destructive testing and failure investigation.
From Design to Implementation and Beyond
As a research centre, TWI provides in-service and new build support for our defence industry Members, including names like Babcock, BAE Systems and Rolls Royce. We have worked on projects across all sectors of the armed forces, from the Royal Air Force and Navy to the Army, to provide innovative solutions for the distinct challenges faced by each sector.
Our support ranges from state of the art research and development activities from design concepts through to advanced defence materials assessment, defence simulation and modelling and manufacture. We also offer in-service support using science and technological experience to solve any problems and mitigate against failure, creating bespoke solutions for our clients.
As the defence industry investigates increasingly complex equipment systems, our expertise in testing, analysis and assessment can be used for the purposes of decision support.
