TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 97/1979
By T G Gooch and J Honeycombe
The report summarises an investigation into the welding of recently developed stress corrosion resistant stainless alloys. Duplex ferritic/austenitic, ferritic/martensitic and extra low interstitial fully ferritic steels were studied, in thicknesses circa 2 and 10-13mm.
Welding was carried out using the manual metal arc, TIG, MIG, submerged arc and electron beam processes, with matching composition, austenitic stainless steel and nickel base consumables.
Intercrystalline corrosion, stress corrosion, tensile and toughness tests were carried out and from the results obtained, recommendations are made regarding optimum welding procedures and consumable selection for each material type.
