A new edition of the long-standing procedure BS 7910 (Guide to methods for assessing the acceptability of flaws in metallic structures) has just been published, superseding the 2005 edition and 2007 amendment. The new document is available from BSI
and authorised retailers.
Features of the new procedure include:
a re-structuring of the fracture assessment clauses
revised procedure for the treatment of fracture toughness data
methods for incorporating crack-tip constraint into fracture calculations
methods for incorporating weld strength mismatch into fracture calculations
a revised compendium of residual stress distributions, and a new method for applying them
revisions to the clauses on flaw interaction
a new annex on reliability of NDT techniques
revised procedures for the assessment of creep and creep/fatigue
an improved corrosion assessment procedure
corrections and clarifications throughout the document.
Further details are available in a number of publications including:
The new procedures have implications for a number of TWI services and products:
1. ECA service: analyses carried out from 1 January 2014 will usually be carried out using the new procedure (although there may be circumstances in which the 2005 procedures should be used instead, eg legacy calculations and projects which have already started)
2. CrackWISE® software: CW4 (compatible with the 2005 edition, plus Amendment 1, issued in 2007) has now been superseded by CW5 (compatible with the 2013 edition).
Please see our recent article: Introducing CrackWISE® Version 5
3. Training in BS 7910 and CrackWISE has been revised to take account of the new procedures, and can be undertaken either at one of our regular courses (held in Abington, UK, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Houston, USA): Structural Integrity Assessment and Practical Application of BS 7910 Procedures for the Assessment of Flaws in Metallic Structuresor as a customised course for your organisation.
4. Introducing BS 7910:2013 - one day training course. More information
