TWI Ltd was one of 16 prize sponsors at Sheffield Hallam University’s Department of Engineering and Mathematics prizegiving ceremony. The ceremony took place on Monday 13 November 2017, with TWI sponsoring a Welding and Joining Project engineering prize.

The prize went to two winners, Josh Priest and Scott Harding, for their outstanding work on final year undergraduate engineering projects based on welding and joining. Josh and Scott were awarded £250 each.

Josh Priest, who has been studying for an MEng in Mechanical Engineering, undertook a final year project on the Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Electron Beam Welds in SA508 Grade Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel Steel. The project sought to assess the suitability of the electron beam welding process for welding nuclear reactor pressure vessels constructed from the newly-investigated SA508 Grade 4N carbon steel variation of the commonly-used SA508 Grade 3 alloy. The project also suggested a suitable heat treatment cycle as well as carrying out parameter development for 100mm deep penetration electron beam welds. This was followed by the production of defect-free sample billets.

Scott Harding, a part-time BEng (Hons) Materials Engineering student, was sponsored for his course by Rolls Royce. His final year engineering project explored the use of Incline Coherent Interferometry (ICI) to control the depth of penetration of an electron beam welded Full Penetration Blind Keyhole (FPBK) weld. The project also won Rolls Royce’s Sir Henry Royce Award.
