Webinar on Additive Manufacturing of Metallic Alloys
This webinar provides an overview of metallic additive manufacturing as both an emerging manufacturing route and an industrial engineering tool. It introduces the main metal additive manufacturing process families, and explains how their capabilities differ in terms of component size, deposition rate, complexity, repair potential and material efficiency. The webinar also highlights where metallic additive manufacturing is currently being applied.
A key theme is that successful additive manufacturing adoption depends not only on the ability to build a component, but also on:
- understanding material behaviour
- metallurgy
- flaws
- residual stresses
- inspection
- qualification and performance in service.
The session therefore connects additive manufacturing with TWI’s wider expertise in welding, joining, materials performance, failure analysis and structural integrity, and provides a foundation for the more detailed technical content that will be covered in the upcoming TWI additive manufacturing course.
Meet the team
Hossein has worked at TWI from 1 July 2024 as a Materials Engineer in the Materials Performance and Characterisation section. The majority of his work involves microstructural characterisation of a variety of metallic alloys processed via various techniques. Hossein obtained his PhD from Lancaster University with an expertise in alloy design for additive manufacturing, followed by working at the universities of Lancaster and Southampton, as well as additive manufacturing industry for two years.
