Register for our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Event

Thu, 25 September, 2025

There is still time to register for our event, ‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Engineering: From Vision to Practice,’ which is due to take place at TWI Cambridge on 16 October, 2025.

Engineering has traditionally faced challenges around attracting a diverse workforce and this event has been designed to bring together stakeholders from industry, academia and the public sector to address systemic barriers and explore actionable strategies for improving representation and inclusion across engineering disciplines.

The Importance of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Equality and diversity are important for building fairer and more inclusive workplaces that allow different perspectives to be heard and everyone to fulfil their potential. A diverse workforce draws on varied backgrounds and experiences to create a more innovative environment that improves problem-solving. In addition, diverse organisations can draw on a wider pool of talent, creating a more engaged and motivated workforce, and enhancing an organisation’s reputation for both customers and potential employees.

Outside of this, there are legal ramifications under the Equality Act 2010, which prohibits discrimination based on nine protected characteristics (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation).

About the Event

The full-day event will begin with a meet-and-greet accompanied by a complimentary breakfast before a welcome from TWI CEO, Dr Caroline Gumble and are delighted to announce that our keynote speaker for the event is Katherine Bennett, CBE FRAeS, Chief Executive Officer for the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.

Next, attendees are invited to a panel meeting, featuring representatives from our Industrial Members GKN Aerospace and Lloyd's Register, that will discuss the topic of ‘Barriers to Diversity in Engineering’ where you will be able to explore the challenges faced by industry in regards to diversity.

Interactive breakout sessions will allow you to delve deeper into particular topics, such as challenging STEM bias in education, supporting women and minorities in technical roles, inclusive recruitment and retention, and more.

Following a complimentary lunch, the outcomes from the breakout sessions will be shared ahead of the second expert panel session of the day, alongside the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Women's Engineering Society, which will provide ‘Practical Solutions for Inclusive Engineering.’

With refreshments provided during the day, there will then be time to see the event exhibition before a closing speech from TWI’s Head of Global HR, Elizabeth Andrews.
