Alan Taylor FRSC FIMMM

Alan Taylor joined the ceramics section at TWI in 1995 after gaining his PhD in physics at Warwick University and undertaking post-doctoral work in chemistry at Brunel University. This post-doctoral work included research into sol-gel technology, which he has continued into his professional career.

His focus at TWI has been to provide help and assistance to Industrial Members wishing to exploit the technical and commercial potential of nanotechnology. Alan sits on the NTI/1 BSI committee for nanotechnology and acts as the technical lead for much of TWI’s work in this area. He is also a member of the editorial board of the ‘Journal of Coating Science and Technology’ and is an expert consultant in the field of highly repellent surfaces for the Value4Nano and NANOfutures European initiatives.

Development of Highly Repellent Silica Particles for Protection of Hemp Shiv used as Insulation Materials

New bio-materials have recently gained interest for use in insulation panels in walls, but wider adoption by the building industry is hindered by their intrinsic properties. The fact that such materials are mainly composed of cellulose makes them combustible, and their hydrophilic surface presents a high water uptake, which would lead to faster biodegradation.

New Assessment Criteria for Durability Evaluation of Highly Repellent Surfaces

Highly repellent surfaces are constantly being sought in a number of industrial sectors, where accumulation of unwanted material (ice, debris, insects etc…) can cause serious detriment of function. Conventional highly repellent materials do not have the superlative repellence of some of the latest innovations in superhydrophobic/oleophobic coatings, but do have the advantage of durability in many applications.

Advanced Low Energy Durable Coatings

The development of novel, durable, low-surface energy coatings with antifouling (ice, insects, biofouling etc.) and low friction properties is believed to be a promising direction for research with benefit to the transportation, construction and power generation sectors. Conventional coatings and surface treatments have not been successful in this area because of a lack of long-term durability and limited repellency of environmental fouling agents.
