High Pressure CO2 Testing

High-pressure CO2 testing is vital for ensuring the safety of pressurised CO2 equipment, transport and storage systems; preventing leaks, ruptures and other failures. There are various methods for testing high pressure CO2 assets, from hydrostatic testing, which is commonly used to test fire suppression systems, and corrosion and seal integrity tests for pipelines.

High pressure CO2 testing can be performed for a range of assets and used in conjunction with bend and axial loading to simulate different environmental factors. Testing is performed to verify structural integrity and safe operation, as well as to determine operational limits for different materials and components, such as seals and high-pressure CO2 injection systems.

Core Research Programme (CRP) and Joint Industry Projects (JIP)

Core Research

Each year the TWI Core Research Programme (CRP) addresses challenges on behalf of our Industrial Members as well as developing specific technologies and processes. Each of the projects under the CRP is focussed on engineering, materials or manufacturing technologies.

Joint Industry Projects

TWI also conducts Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) that bring together groups of Industrial Members to share the cost of research activities in areas of mutual industrial interest, gaining exclusive access to the outcomes. These projects cover a broad range of topics.

High Pressure CO2 Testing at TWI

We provide advanced high-pressure CO2 testing at our specialised laboratories, where we can simulate supercritical CO2 environments to test materials under extreme pressures and temperatures.

Our experts have decades of experience in material integrity, corrosion and fracture in harsh environments for industries such as oil and gas and power generation, while our testing facilities can deliver tests ranging from leak tightness and burst pressure tests for large components down to assessing material performance in impure CO2 streams. Our extensive facilities can also perform a range of loading under pressure tests before we collect the data to assess factors including corrosion rates, fracture and material behaviour, and leak tightness using a range of advanced NDT and mechanical testing services.

We have a great deal of experience in assessing corrosion, seal degradation, and overall fitness-for-service for pipelines, seals, and components for many of the biggest names in the oil and gas industry – helping to develop new standards for materials in CO2 transport and inform design decisions for pipeline safety and performance.

Key Aspects

  • Specialised Facilities: Our purpose-built labs and pressure pits provide internal/external pressure testing (up to 29,000 psi), including HPHT (High Pressure/High Temperature) testing for corrosion-resistant alloys
  • Material Assessment: Capability to assess materials for supercritical CO2 transport, including corrosion and material behaviour in impure CO2 environments
  • Test Types: Providing a range of tests, including slow strain rate tensile testing, fracture toughness, corrosion-fatigue, and proof-of-concept tests for new designs
  • Applications: Relevant for industries such as oil and gas, power generation, and carbon capture technologies
