Dr Paul Woollin, FREng, FWeldI, FIMMM, TWI’s Director of Research and Quality Assurance, will be presenting as part of our first-ever Technology Fellows’ Day on 15 May, 2025.
Paul joined the Materials Department at TWI in 1992, having graduated and gained a doctorate from the University of Cambridge. He specialises in failure avoidance of welded structures, particularly microstructural effects, defect formation and approaches to avoidance of hydrogen embrittlement in service. Paul became Head of the Materials Department in 2005 and was appointed to the Board of TWI in 2010. He is a member of the UK Technical Advisory Group on Structural Integrity (TAGSI) and a non-executive director of the International Institute of Welding and the UK Forum for Engineering Structural Integrity.
His Technology Fellows’ Day presentation will focus on, ‘Assumptions on Weld Defect Size and Shape for the Safety Case of an IOF Nuclear Component.’ During his presentation, Paul will investigate the need to update the structural integrity safety case for Incredibility of Failure (IoF) components in operational nuclear power plant, in relation to tolerance to manufacturing defects, which are typically of greatest concern at welds.
Our in-person Technology Fellows’ Day will bring together the world-leading expertise of our Technology Fellows to focus on challenges and solutions for nuclear and fusion with crossover to other industries.
