Advanced manufacturing engineer, Pedro De Sousa Santos represented TWI at the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers’ Armourers’ Alumni Company Reception on 7 February 2022.
This was the first time that the event has been hosted at the Armourers Hall in London since 2020, and it also marked the 700th anniversary of the founding of the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers.
Pedro gave a speech at the event titled, ‘Stopping the World from Falling Apart’ as he showcased a unique, state-of-the-art manufacturing showpiece that was created at TWI and is on display at the Armourers’ Hall.
This showpiece, called ‘The Cutting Edge’ was designed to raise awareness of our innovations in joining, coating and inspection technologies, and contains a diverse mixture of materials including ceramics, composites metals, polymers and wood.
Pedro was one of six speakers, including students and lecturers from Imperial College, The University of Hertfordshire and Queen Mary University London. The speakers were invited to answer questions and a panel discussion was held on the subject of commercialising materials science research. The anniversary event also saw the endowment in perpetuity of the Armourers and Brasiers’ Chair in Materials Science at Imperial College London, with Professor Mary Ryan FREng being named as the first postholder as Chair.
Speaking on the event, Pedro said, “I was delighted to be invited by the Worshipful Company of Armourers and Braisers as a speaker to such a prestigious venue. What better way to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the trust than an in-person event with multiple speakers sharing exciting innovations in the field of material science!”
The Welding Institute works alongside the Armourers and Brasiers’ Trust as part of the TWI Materials Science Partnership to support and champion excellence and endeavour in materials science and metallurgy education and research.
TWI was honoured to be part of this anniversary event celebrating seven centuries at the cutting edge of materials science.
