Funding Secured for iAM-3DPO Project

Wed, 02 November, 2022

Innovate UK funding has been secured by NquiringMinds in collaboration with TWI, Trumpf UK, ThinkLaser, Lancaster University and Materialise for a project titled iAM-3DPO.

iAM-3DPO will investigate processing conditions in metal additive manufacturing, specifically PBF-LB (Powder Bed Fusion Laser Beam).

When processing components via PBF-LB, repeatability of part properties and right-first-time capability require in-process optimisation of build parameters at each 2D-layer geometry within the 3D part. This currently takes a large amount of computing time and an analogue way of processing data.

If build parameters are not optimised then variations in material can occur, particularly in parts with non-uniform geometric features. Thermal stresses can also build up, leading to part distortion and cracking.

iAM-3DPO will leverage MCP (Materialise Control Platform) technology, allowing total beam path control, and VariMODE Pro’s total beam shape control to mitigate the risks associated with build failure. Together, the system will enable dynamic optimisation of advanced process parameters and scan strategies, and could lead to solutions to cost effectively upgrade aging PBF equipment.

You can speak to TWI about the iAM-3DPO project on booth 12.0-A113 at Formnext in Frankfurt, Germany, on 15-18 November.

iAM-3DPO has received funding from InnovateUK via EUREKA R&D:SMART Advanced Manufacturing grant reference 76940
