TWI and ALFED hold successful first aluminium workshop

Fri, 29 March, 2019

As part of our close working relationship, TWI and the Aluminium Federation (ALFED) held a first aluminium workshop at TWI’s headquarters near Cambridge.

The free event considered and presented key aspects of surfacing and joining technologies for aluminium. This included an exploration of the technical and commercial manufacturing advantages that aluminium can offer as a material for industry, particularly within the aerospace and automotive industries.

The highly successful event saw 60 attendees from a range of technical and industrial backgrounds witness a series of expert presentations and workshops. There were also plenty of opportunities for networking, a tour of TWI’s facilities, and a chance to hear how ALFED could help leverage funding opportunities on behalf of TWI Members.

With experts on hand to offer advice and guidance, the workshop provided an insight into the diverse range of work undertaken by TWI that is applicable to aluminium usage in all industry sectors.

The forward-moving and engaging workshop has provoked positive and appreciative feedback from those in attendance, including from representatives of TWI and ALFED.

ALFED’s Technical Manager, Jan Lukaszewski, said it was an “outstanding event,” adding that the “presentations balanced innovation with theory and practical elements.”

Jan continued, “Each presenter introduced a potentially complex topic simply and rapidly, without losing the audience, raising the level of understanding to ‘leading edge.’ The tour built on the theoretical presentations with practical illustrations and it was incredible how many new and innovative ideas with such diversity, could be presented in a single day.”

Jan noted that there was “outstanding positive feedback from the entire audience,” and revealed that plans are already underway for next year’s event.

In the meantime, there is plenty to follow up and further dialogue resulting from the workshop as the relationship between TWI and ALFED continues to evolve.
