TWI Advanced NDE Inspection Capabilities
TWI’s NDE Group are renowned for their research and development solutions across industry but their advanced NDE inspection capability for site deployment is lesser known. This webinar will showcase a range of advanced NDE inspections solutions available to support industry needs.
This event will provide an introduction to the team and an overview of the following technologies:
• PolyTest: an innovative field inspection system for volumetric non-destructive phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT) of butt fusion (BF) welds and electrofusion (EF) joints in polyethylene (PE) pipes.
• Long Range Ultrasonic Technologies: An overview of TWI research, development and inspection in guided wave testing.
• Corrosion mapping: Discussion on the range of technologies available for assessment of corrosion.
• Full matrix capture: advanced NDE capability, showing TWI research and development through to preparation for site deployment.
• In line NDT: TWI’s in line robotic deployed Crystal solution, improving efficiency, saving time and money for the users.
• ECAT: A technique for replacing MPI/DPI inspections, no need for chemicals, no waiting times, no cleaning etc, scan and receive live results encoded or not.
• Through weld cap inspection (Adaptive Total Focussing Method (ATFM): Inspect the weld through the cap using ATFM, with the algorithm accounting for the variable surface of the weld cap. Saves having to grind the cap flush, which reduces the risk of stress points in the weld. Can offer an inspection method where access either side of the weld for traditional techniques is not feasible.
• Weldwise AI: A pass / fail AI system that allows the operator to inspect a weld and get a pass / fail result without having to perform in depth data analysis.
Meet the team
Dr Calum Hoyle
Team Manager for the Software and Robotics group
Calum has a doctorate in Ultrasonics and over 7 years’ experience in Non Destructive Testing (NDT). He joined TWI as a PhD student researching the use of Rayleigh waves in NDT.
After completing his doctorate he became a TWI Project Leader specialising in the application of NDT through the use of robotics. In this role he became the lead contact at TWI for the Rolls-Royce Composite Technology Facility (CTF) and led numerous robotic inspection projects for the Aerospace, Oil & Gas, Nuclear, Renewables and Defence industry sectors.
He is currently the Team Manager for the Software and Robotics group, and has experience of a wide range of inspection techniques, including conventional Ultrasonics, Phased Array, Full Matrix Capture (FMC)-Total Focusing Method (TFM), Virtual Source Aperture (VSA), Plane Wave Imaging (PWI), Eddy Current Testing (ECT), Microwave and Tap Testing.
Chris Otter
Sector Manager, Industrial Membership Services
Chris is an experienced manufacturing engineer in a variety of material joining processes relevant to multiple industry sectors.
With a sound knowledge of facilities and expertise at TWI, his role includes management of TWI industrial membership interactions and assisting industry to access TWI’s unique range of member services to benefit their business.
