Welding of Vanadium Alloys for the Fusion Industry

Project Code: 36191

Start date and planned duration: January 2025, 12 months

Objective

  • Develop a specialised environmental control system for clean welding of vanadium.
  • Develop a preliminary welding procedure applicable to the fusion industry.

Industry Sectors

- Nuclear

Benefits to Industry

The fusion industry has a requirement to weld vanadium alloys (including specialised compositions) for the next generation of fusion reactors. This will likely include repair scenarios, for which arc welding is a possible method. This project is intended to help the fusion industry understand the limitations and requirements of this process for welding vanadium.
