TWI’s Chief Technology and Quality Assurance Officer, Paul Woollin, attended the 79th International Institute of Welding (IIW) Annual Assembly 2026, which took place in Salzburg, Austria from 12-17 July, where he was elected as one of the IIW’s three Vice Presidents.
This recognises Paul’s track record of driving industrial progress in weld assurance and representing TWI internationally and also reflects the wide respect in which TWI and its world-leading experts are held.
Paul sat down to film a short video, which you can see below, to offer an insight into the history of the IIW and its ties to TWI /The Welding Institute and our origins as the British Welding Research Association. He also reveals why he first got involved with the IIW as a young engineer, sought to join the IIW’s Board of Directors, and latterly applied for the position of Vice President.
You will also hear about what the work of the IIW’s Technology Management Board and International Authorisation Board, how the work of the IIW aligns with TWI strategy, and how Paul envisions the IIW and TWI working together towards shared success for the benefit of society and industry around the world.
