The Welding Institute Members’ Day 2025

Wed, 27 August, 2025

The Welding Institute is holding their annual Members’ Day on 15 October, 2025. Although this event is only open to Members of The Welding Institute, Industrial Members of TWI should also take note as your TWI Membership includes a number of Professional Memberships (at AWeldI grade) of the Institute.

The event will offer networking opportunities alongside a programme of thought-provoking discussions.

Taking place at our headquarters near Cambridge, UK, this year’s event will take the theme of ‘Welding Quality and Skills in Manufacturing,’ with a particular focus on the shortage of competent welders faced by the UK.

Topics to be discussed at the Members’ Day include:

  • Failings in weld quality and their real-life consequences
  • The shortfall in competent welders and welding technicians currently against the industry demand
  • The relationship between technical understanding, practical skills, process control and weld quality
  • Measures being taken in technical education and training by employers and training providers
  • Implementing a career path in welding engineering

In addition, there will be workshops designed to spark conversation, share progress, and shape the future of the profession, including:

  • Developing a Fresh Vision for Professional Registration: A chance to rethink how professional recognition can evolve to meet the needs of modern engineers and technicians
  • Progress Across the Institute in 2025: Exploring key achievements from the past year and how they support Institute Members, the wider welding, joining and allied technology communities, and industry.
  • Closing the Welding Skills Gap: With the critical shortage of skilled welding professionals, explore education, training, and employer-led initiatives tackling this challenge head-on.

Among the speakers lined up for the day are Keith Birkitt, Principal Materials Engineer for the UK Health and Safety Executive and Helen Higgs, Resource Programme Director for EDF Energy at Hinkley Point C.
