We are inviting Industrial Members to join our new Joint Industry Programme (JIP) project investigating, ‘Evaluation of Ultrasonic Array Inspection Techniques for Coarse Grain Metallic Structures.’
Ultrasonic inspection has proven to be an efficient and reliable method for non-destructive testing of parts used in industrial applications. Ultrasonic inspection allows for flaws to be detected precisely and comprehensively in a wide range of materials and includes advanced techniques including Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), Full Matrix Capture (FMC)/Total Focusing Method (TFM), Phase Coherence Imaging (PCI) and Plane Wave Imaging (PWI), which offer enhanced Probability of Detection, reduced need for multiple probes and scans, better defect sizing and characterisation, higher resolution and imaging capabilities compared to conventional ultrasonic inspection methods.
Despite these many advantages, ultrasonic inspection of coarse-grained metallic structures has created challenges around signal attenuation, scattering, and reduced resolution caused by the grain structure.
About the Project
This JIP will compare a range of advanced ultrasonic array inspection techniques to identify the most effective approaches for detecting and sizing flaws in coarse-grained metallic structures. With a wide range of new ultrasonic techniques appearing on mainstream PAUT equipment, this project will provide guidance on the suitability of these techniques underpinned with experimental evidence on a range of industry applications of NDT for demanding industry sectors like Power, Nuclear, Oil and Gas, and Defence.
By joining this project, you will gain access to the results as well as being able to influence the direction of the research while splitting the cost of the work with other JIP sponsors.
