Thu, 20 April, 2023

This year is the 100th anniversary of The Welding Institute, so we have been speaking to our Professional Members to get their insights into being members of the Institute as well as finding out more about them and their careers in engineering.

EUR ING Neil F Bennett CEng MSc SenMWeldI is currently the head of Welding Engineering at Altrad Babcock Ltd, having attained an MSc in Welding Engineering from Cranfield University and also the TWI Welding Engineering Diploma from our own TWI Training Examination Services.

Neil joined the Institute in 1984/5 as an Associate Member but has gone on to become a Senior Member, a position he has held for the past 11 years. He explained that his responsibilities at Altrad Babcock Ltd see him oversee a small team of Senior Welding Engineers as well as a Senior Technician, a Welding Technologist and Welding Technicians/Instructors.

However, his career has seen him move between different industries, having begun in power generation before spending time working in rail, oil and gas, aerospace, automotive and automation before moving back into the power generation sector.

Neil offered his career highlights along with details of the challenges he has faced in his career, before explaining why he joined The Welding Institute and opted to go on an become professionally registered.

Now a CEng, Neil revealed that, “Chartership is a well-respected level of recognition of achievement within engineering, which has brought me satisfaction from the work choices I have made to opportunities that have arisen in my career.”

He also spoke on mentoring another professional through to gaining their own CEng and explained that his main interactions with the Institute now come through attending seminars, webinars and local Branch events.

As well as offering his view of the benefits of Professional Membership, Neil told us about his career aspirations and delivered some advice for his younger self.
