GeoSmart Project Partners Host EU Ambassador to Iceland

Thu, 02 February, 2023

Gerosion, who are partners in the GeoSmart consortium, hosted the EU ambassador to Iceland, Lucie Samcova-Hall Allen, at their facility in Árleynir.

The focus of the visit was to discuss the climate and energy framework in Europe and Gerosion’s associated EU funded projects.

The EU-wide key targets for 2030 are cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, an increased share of renewable energy, and improvements in energy efficiency.

Dr Jan Prikryl and Dr Kristjan F. Alexandersson presented how the Horizon 2020 GeoSmart and Geo-Drill projects are helping to achieve such targets.

The GeoSmart project revolves around innovations that help to improve the flexibility and efficiency of geothermal heat and power systems; innovations which are currently being implemented at two demonstration sites.

GeoSmart aims to reduce cost for CHP (combined heat and power) generation.

In Geo-Drill, the consortium is developing novel and cost-effective drilling technologies, primarily for geothermal systems.

The project’s novel drilling hammer is scheduled to be tested this spring.

Both of these EU-funded projects have the overall aim of helping to improve green energy generation and energy security - topics that are critical in the current geopolitical landscape.
