Celebrating Earth Day 2023 with GeoSmart

Fri, 21 April, 2023

This Saturday (22 April 2023) is ‘Earth Day,’ continuing the theme of ‘Invest In Our Planet’ for a second year running.

This is the first time that a theme has been continued over two years for Earth Day, with a focus on engaging with businesses, institutions, governments, and individuals around the globe to do their part for the planet.

The GeoSmart consortium have been working to progress the exploitation of geothermal energy, which has the potential to provide more than enough energy to meet the needs of the entire planet.

As a reliable, ‘always on’ energy resource geothermal both sustainable and environmentally-friendly, being much cleaner than traditional fossil fuels.

However, geothermal energy still has its challenges, primarily related to accessibility and cost. The highly corrosive, high-temperature environments associated with geothermal are particularly challenging and, as such, while storing the energy gained from geothermal application has also been something to address.

The GeoSmart project team have been creating solutions for storing heat energy and cost-effectively responding to network demands.

This work aims to help promote geothermal and create a cleaner future for the planet, and we hope you can join us in doing something, however small, to ‘invest in our planet’ this Earth Day.

The GeoSmart project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 818576
