TWI Student George Brooks Completes his PhD

Mon, 04 April, 2022

TWI is delighted to announce that George Brooks has successfully completed his NSIRC PhD studentship investigating the influence of different friction stir welding techniques in thick section aluminium alloys.

These techniques, namely weld-flip-weld, simultaneous double sided and supported stationary shoulder, each has a different thermo-mechanical weld input and, consequently, effect on the weld zone, which had not previously been investigated and quantified.

The work covered a range of weld quality assessments in AA5083-O, AA6082-T6 and AA7050-T7, including micro-hardness mapping, full section cross tensile testing, electron back scatter diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy.

A winner of several awards during his studentship, George successfully defended his thesis in February of this year and was subsequently awarded his PhD through Sheffield Hallam University.

We wish George well in his new career as an Assistant Mechanical Engineer with Atkins within the Nuclear & Power sector.
