TWI’s Richard Freeman Wins International AWS Award

Thu, 26 November, 2020

TWI Associate Director and Industrial Membership Group Manager, Dr Richard Freeman has been honoured with the International Meritorious Certificate Award by the American Welding Society (AWS). The annual award is given in recognition of significant contributions to the worldwide welding industry, reflecting “service to the international welding community.”

The AWS Awards recognise those in the education, industrial and research communities who have made distinctive contributions to advance the science, technology and application of welding and allied processes, such as brazing, cutting, joining, soldering and thermal spraying.

Dr Freeman began his working life as an apprentice at Siemens Power Generation in 1980 before attaining his Honours Degree in Metallurgy from Sheffield University in 1987. He moved to Lucas Aerospace (now Collins Aerospace) in 1990, where he was an Engineering Materials Manager. During his time there, Richard began his PhD on wear and corrosion resistant materials for the actuation industry, which he completed in 1994.

Joining TWI in 1996, Dr Freeman now looks after TWI’s transport sector customers from the aerospace, defence, automotive, rail and shipbuilding industries. He has also been involved in a number of standards committees on welding and additive manufacturing and has been a part of AWS’ D17committee for welding in the aerospace industry since 1998. In addition, Richard is the Nadcap lead within the Welding Task Group, for the Additive Manufacturing Audit Checklists.

Richard’s years of expertise and dedication to TWI has seen him represent the business and assist our Industrial Members with projects across the world, and we would like to congratulate him on his award.
