TWI Set for Charitable Dragon Boat Festival

Tue, 20 August, 2019

TWI is set to battle it out for the top spot at this year's Cambridge Dragon Boat Race after narrowly missing out in 2018 by the smallest margin.

Last year’s race saw TWI’s two teams both qualify from the heats to reach the final. ‘Up Ship Creek’ ended up finishing in a narrow second behind eventual winners ‘Row-bots’, of CMR Surgical, whilst ‘Usain Boat’ came in fifth.

This will be the fifth year that TWI has competed, with TWI entering three teams, ‘Up Ship Creek,’ ‘Shipfaced’ and ‘Fuego,’ and looking to go one better this year to reach the top spot.  Each 30-foot boat contains up to ten people paddling as well as a drummer to beat time and a pilot at the helm to steer a straight course.

While it is a fun day out, there is also a good cause behind the day as it raises money for the Addenbrookes’ Charitable Trust. The 2018 event generated a total of £30,000 for the Trust, with £780 generated by the two TWI teams. The day attracted over 500 spectators who watched the 35 teams battle it out, with some teams competing in fancy dress.

The 15th Cambridge Dragon Boat Festival will take place on Saturday 7th September 2019 on the River Cam at Fen Ditton and more than 40 teams are expected to compete over the 200m race course, watched by several hundred spectators.

As well as the races themselves there will be the usual range of bankside entertainment, food stalls and fun activities to guarantee a fabulous day out for all the family!
