TWI is offering Metallography courses in October

Tue, 30 July, 2019

TWI will be holding two metallography courses this October. The courses, ‘Metallography Insight’ and ‘Field Metallography’ are both suitable for technicians, lab managers or engineers who wish to develop an understanding of the processes and capabilities of metallography and field metallography as an analytical technique for quality control, inspection and failure investigation.

The two-day Metallography Insight course will teach attendees about:

  • Sample preparation
  • Microstructural characterisation
  • Metallography and fractography in failure analysis
  • Best practice for digital image capture, analysis and enhancement
  • Hardness and percent ferrite measurements
  • Requirements for documentation and reporting
  • Best practice for the efficient and safe running of laboratories, to maintain high throughput and quality. HSE requirements, lab layout and time saving sample preparation techniques.

The one-day Field Metallography course will include:

  • On-site sample preparation and replication using portable machines
  • Light Microscopy, using portable microscopes/cameras, for microstructural characterisation of a wide range of materials
  • Metallography and fractography in failure analysis
  • Best practice of field digital image capture, analysis and enhancement
  • Demonstration of portable machines for hardness and percent ferrite measurements
  • Requirements for documentation and reporting
  • Best practice for on-site metallography activities, including the prior knowledge/planning required, HSE requirements and time saving techniques

These courses will provide attendees with a knowledge of metallographic preparation, to improve efficiency in this area. Not only will the courses provide practical knowledge to assist with the analysis of specimens and microstructures, but will also offer recording and reporting skills to support this.

With a combination of practical and theoretical information, these courses will provide attendees with additional knowledge to help progress their careers and add to their knowledge and skills.

Training Feedback:

Both of the courses were held in July 2019 and Antony Lister, a Welding Specialist (NDT) at Responsive Ltd, was one of the attendees at the Metallography Insight course. After taking part in the course - which was led by expert Ashley Spencer – Antony said, “The course content and materials were fantastic but the expert knowledge and enthusiasm delivered by Ash is what really made it!” Anthony also discussed the range of topics covered in the course, a few examples being  mounting, preparation, etching and viewing with both macro and microscopes, including a couple of electron microscopes. Ashley highly recommends the course, saying, “Anyone involved in metallography - either just starting out or well established in the field - could certainly take something away from this course!”
