TWI Experts Contributing To IOM3 Failure Investigation Group

Wed, 09 October, 2019

Two experts from TWI are to contribute to the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining’s (IOM3) Material Failure Investigation Group (MFIG) seminar on ‘Failures in Renewable Energy Devices and Equipment’.

Stainless Steels and Non-Ferrous Alloys’ Section Manager, Kasra Sotoudeh will chair the seminar (and the Group committee meeting) which will take place in London, on 17 October, 2019. Meanwhile, Power Industry Section Manager Chris Punshon will deliver a presentation on ‘Materials factors influencing the reliability of devices for renewable energy generation’.

The UK is currently the world’s leading market for offshore wind harnessing devices with an operational capacity of around 8.5GW. Many of these devices have been in service for several decades and some components are beginning to show evidence of failure. The seminar will provide details of papers examining different aspects of failure.

In addition to Chris Punshon’s presentation there will be presentations by representatives of GL Industrial Services UK Ltd and Uniper Energy:

  • Five Wind Turbine Component Failures – One Propagation Mechanism

by Jeffrey Stephen Jones, GL Industrial Services UK Ltd;

  • Renewable Energy – Lessons Learnt from Failures across the Industry

by David Marks, Uniper Energy.
