TWI develops production performance programme for shipyards

Fri, 21 June, 2019

TWI is co-ordinating the SHIPLYS (Ship Lifecycle Software Solution) project that aims to transform the early stages of ship design by developing simulation and modelling tools that will streamline and improve the processes involved.

For this project, TWI has developed a production performance evaluation and optimisation programme. The programme aims to provide shipyards with a service that can benchmark their production performance and optimise the budget allocation. The programme incorporates numerous, multi-disciplinary techniques, including multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), risk assessment (RA), life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA), life-cycle assessment  (LCA), site operation and management of shipbuilding. The framework of this programme allows customisation to any extent, including the scope, application and level of detail, making it adaptable to the requirements of different stakeholders in the marine industry.

Xiaofei Cui, Senior Project Leader, Asset Life Management, visited recently Astilleros de Santander SA shipyard located in the Port of Santander, Spain. By engaging with stakeholders, Xiaofei was gained valuable feedback and collected data for a case study.  It is envisaged that the results of this work will be published in several technical papers.
