TWI successfully ran the latest of their friction stir welding (FSW) training courses at the beginning of March. The ‘Fundamentals of FSW’ course provides a basic understanding of the underlying principles of the FSW process and leads on to further courses in the series, including the more practically oriented FSW Operator’s Course, which qualifies attendees to the requirements of ISO 25239:2011 Part 3.
Attendees from several companies spent a day at the TWI Technical Centre, Yorkshire, learning first-hand the advantages and benefits of FSW and observing several friction stir welding demonstrations in both thin and thick section aluminium. After lunch, the attendees examined existing and potential applications for FSW and considered the design and production implications of adopting the technology. The day concluded with discussions on how FSW might impact upon their own businesses and products.
