Innovation Centre Research Fellow Becomes Member CEng

Wed, 02 October, 2019

Gabriela Gallegos, a Research Fellow at London South Bank Innovation Centre based at TWI, has become a Member Chartered Engineer (CEng) of The Welding Institute.

Having obtained her bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mexico before studying for her PhD in France, Gabriela spent five years managing a technical department before moving to the UK to join TWI, where she has spent three years as a project leader.

However, Gabriela wanted to build upon her experience and gain a qualification to recognise her expertise in the UK, so she applied for Member CEng with The Welding Institute.

A Chartered Engineer is an engineer who has registered with the British regulatory body for engineers, the Engineering Council. Prospective chartered engineers need to apply before being picked out for a peer review evaluation. The title of Chartered Engineer is protected by British civil law and is one of the most recognisable and respected international engineering qualifications.

While her Member CEng will afford Gabriela a higher level of recognition in the UK and worldwide, she is also aware that many roles now ask for this qualification alongside other experience and expertise.

By becoming a Member CEng, Gabriela will now also have access to leadership training, greater career progression potential and peer networking opportunities, among other benefits.

Gabriela, whose work has been related to robotics and automation, now hopes to go on to become a senior project leader at TWI and, with her improved status, we are sure she is making all the right moves to achieve that.
