Additive Manufacturing Event Held at AMP Technology Centre

TWI held an Additive Manufacturing Symposium at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) Technology Centre in Rotherham on Tuesday, 26 November.

Over 100 delegates attended the event, including representatives from TWI Member companies Boeing, BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce, as well as suppliers such as Trumpf and EOS. Students from universities were also present as a variety of speakers from inside and outside of TWI offered information on the many benefits of additive manufacturing (AM).

Chaired by TWI’s Welding and Technology Group Manager and Associate Director, Prof Rob Scudamore, the day opened with a presentation on the development of metal AM from Phill Dickens of the University of Nottingham research institute, Added Scientific. TWI’s Carl Hauser followed with a talk focused on the developments of Laser Direct Energy Deposition and Dr Paul Goodwin rounded off by presenting on the latest in laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) research.

The afternoon session featured presentations on EB Wire AM and modelling and materials in AM, as well as the eagerly anticipated topic of certification, which was delivered by Lloyd’s Register’s David Hardacre.

The day came to a close with a tour of the facilities at TWI Technology Centre in Yorkshire, including a showcase of the new Trumpf 7040 LMD system as well as laser powder bed fusion equipment such as TWI’s Renishaw and Realizer machines, and the EOS M290 system.

Overall, the day provided a variety of information and acted as an excellent networking opportunity, opening the lines of communication about the many benefits of additive manufacturing.
