Electron beam technology provides solution for Formula One

The performance engineering sector in the UK is built on advanced technologies as applied to Formula One motor racing where structural performance of components is critical to racing success. Over the years, TWI has been involved in supporting materials validation, inspection and joining requirements for a number of race teams.

One example of TWI support is in the application of advanced electron beam (EB) welding technologies and specialised EB equipment. A race team had a requirement to fabricate small pressure vessels in a thin wall aluminium alloy. TWI applied EB technology to weld two hemispherical caps to each assembly. The thin walls of the structure and predicted in-service conditions required the highest degree of quality and joint integrity.
