New Polymer-Based Repair Compounds Guidelines Published

Mon, 30 March, 2026

We are pleased to announce that the Energy Institute have published new, first edition guidelines for the use of polymer-based repair compounds in integrity management.

These guidelines were written by TWI’s adhesive technology consultant, Ewen Kellar, who created the guide as part of a project on behalf of the Energy Institute.

The aim of the publication is to offer guidance for the safe and successful use of polymer-based repair compounds for a range of metallic substrate-based applications, including, but not limited to, pressure vessels, flange faces and external surfaces of piping and other metalwork.

Although repair compounds have seen extensive use on safety-critical equipment in the oil and gas industry over the years, such as for filling corrosion pits and prevent further wall thickness loss, there has been no independently available guidance on their use until now.

This guide has been created to facilitate best practice across industry, assisting those involved in the management of polymer-based repair compounds.

With over 25 years’ experience in engineering, research and product development across areas including adhesive bonding, surface treatment/preparation, project management, business development, failure investigation, training, innovation, legal assistance and R&D, Ewen is one of the leading experts in his field. He has experience working across a range of industry sectors where he has assisted some of the world’s best-known organisations with areas including materials selection, design, and testing through to failure investigation and staff training.

It is testament to Ewen’s technical excellence, knowledge and industry experience that he was entrusted to write this guide for the wider use of industry.

You can find a link to the guide on the Energy Institute’s website, here:
