TWI Representatives Attend UKAEA Event

Fri, 09 May, 2025

Four experts from TWI attended the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority’s (UKAEA), ‘Fusion Industry Programme Showcase’ on 7 May, 2025, in Culham.

TWI's Senior Sector Manager for Nuclear and Fusion, John Ruddleston was joined by our Associate Director for Membership and Sales, Rory Lipington, Project Engineer, Sam Holdsworth and Senior Project Leader, Dibakor Boruah.

The four TWI representatives were there to speak on our involvement in the UKAEA’s Fusion Industry Programme (FIP), which has seen nine organisations – including TWI – secure contracts worth a total of £11.6 million to develop innovative technologies for fusion energy with the aim of advancing fusion energy as a safe, low carbon, and sustainable part of the global future energy mix.

TWI’s work in the programme has focused on cold-spray technology in order to advance cold spray additive manufacture (CSAM) technology for the manufacture of large-scale components from fusion-grade materials. In addition, we have been developing our subsurface machining technology, CoreFlow®, to address fusion machine manufacturing challenges, particularly in relation to the first wall of plasma-facing components.

Our experts were on hand to answer questions and discuss both CoreFlow® and cold spray, as well as providing information about TWI’s other capabilities and work within the nuclear and fusion industries. As well as this, Sam provided attendees with a dedicated presentation on the CoreFlow® process.

We would like to thank everyone who engaged with us during the event and also the UKAEA for hosting.
