We are proud to announce that the HyPStore project has been nominated for three separate Composites UK Awards.
The HyPStore project (Advancing low-carbon hydrogen production and safe storage for mobility) aims to revolutionise hydrogen storage and production through innovative, safe, and efficient solutions, advancing the mobility sector's shift towards low-carbon technologies. Focused upon revolutionising the production and storage of liquid hydrogen, this project concentrated on developing mechanically robust, impermeable tanks with enhanced safety features, including a Leak-Before-Break (LBB) fail-safe design. These advancements will enable a new generation of hydrogen storage solutions, contributing significantly to the mobility sector. The result is a tank concept with high fire retardance, ultra-low gas permeability, and resistance to ageing, chemical erosion, and external impacts.
What makes HyPStore especially exciting is its focus on circularity. By upcycling waste plastics into clean hydrogen and graphene, the project closes the loop: turning discarded material into both a sustainable energy source and an advanced reinforcement for the tanks themselves.
The project was nominated in three separate categories:
- Innovation in Composite Materials
- Sustainability: Circularity
- Innovation in Composite Manufacture
TWI has also been nominated for the ‘Innovation in Composite Manufacture’ award for the Composite-to-Metal Joints project.
The awards take account of the quickly developing landscape for composite applications in industry and award the most innovative composites solutions from UK companies, as well as encouraging and enhancing the visibility of those involved in composite innovation.
TWI has been shortlisted and also announced as winners at the Composites UK Awards on several occasions in the past, and this latest recognition shows the continuing technical excellence demonstrated by experts at TWI.
We now look forward to the awards dinner at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham on 29 October, 2025.
