TWI Reopens its Doors for In-Person Events

Wed, 15 June, 2022

We are pleased to announce that we were able to re-open our doors for the first completely in-person event to be held at TWI in over two years.

Our COVID-conscious ‘Fusion and Big Science’ event, held on 14 June 2022, saw 65 TWI Members and guests join an interesting and honest dialogue around the ‘Manufacturing and Material Challenges in Fusion and Big Science.’

Alongside presentations from TWI experts, there were speakers from the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Frazer-Nash Consultancy, Rolls-Royce, Tokamak Energy Ltd, Freemelt AB, Pro-Beam, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, and The Science and Technology Facilities Council.

There was also an update on the TWI Members’ Core Research Programme, an introduction to TWI Industrial Membership (for non-Members), access to pre-bookable 1-2-1 technical meetings, and a tour of our Cambridge facilities with demonstrations from our technical staff.

Speaking on the successful event, Steve Dodds, our Industry Sector Manager for Power and New Energy, said, “It is great to have reopened our doors to our Members and guests, and to have kick-started with such a future-facing conversation with the fusion and big science community. We are already planning for the next event and look forward to keeping the conversation moving with you all.”

Feedback:

“It was amazing to get back to in person conference/event and have a tour of the TWI facilities.” - Fanny Fouin (UK Atomic Energy Authority)

“Thank you for hosting a most interesting meeting!” - Per Woxenius (Freemelt)

“Thank you very much for this excellently organised event. It turns out more and more that EB (electron beam) welding is becoming a key technology for nuclear, fusion and big science applications. Electron beam welding enables single pass welding and single pass testing of components.“ – Michael Mueller (Pro-Beam)

“Great event. Nice work Steve and team.” - Nick Edge (Advant-Edge Consulting Ltd)

“Thanks for organising the excellent event yesterday, it was well worth attending and I made some useful contacts.” - David Rowe (Cedar Metals Ltd)

“Great event yesterday and great to meet you” - Dr Thomas P. Davis (Oxford Sigma)

We are planning to hold a second Fusion and Big Science event on 7 December 2022, with more details to follow in due course.
