TWI Purchases Port Talbot Site

Thu, 24 February, 2022

We are pleased to announce that we have secured the purchase of the 15,681ft TWI Technology Centre Wales.

Based at the Harbourside development in Port Talbot, the Technology Centre includes state of the art office, laboratory, R&D and testing facilities.

As well as purchasing the existing building, TWI has also acquired additional land, which will allow for expansion to the current offering from the Technology Centre to our Industrial Members.

We have been based at the Harbourside in Port Talbot since the development was completed in 2012, and this purchase demonstrates our commitment to the region as well as securing highly skilled R&D, engineering and technical jobs for the area.

TWI’s expansion in the region is complimented by ongoing local developments, including the construction of improved infrastructure and road networks for the area.

Speaking on the purchase of the Port Talbot site, TWI business group manager, Philip Wallace said, “The TWI Technology Centre was first established at the ECM2 facilities in Margam 18 years ago with a team of four technologists. This team built the foundations of TWI’s presence in Wales and slowly started to develop a strong reputation within the UK and Europe. The move in 2012 from the Margam site to the new Harbourside development, along with the ERDF-funded AEMRI programme, was the catalyst for growth and enabled the team to build what is now a highly successful research group consisting of nearly 50 R&D-focused staff with a global reputation of excellence within the field of non-destructive evaluation (NDE).”

He continued, “The Centre is now looking to expand and broaden its research base to support the UK’s interests within the ever-growing renewable energy sector and in particular the ‘hydrogen economy.’ To this end, the purchase of the Port Talbot site supports a new venture by TWI with the introduction of a new ‘state-of-the-art’ hydrogen testing laboratory, which will be operational by March 2023. I am confident that with the continued support from our network of excellent Wales-based academic institutions, the Welsh Government and of course, the Neath Port Talbot Council, the team at TWI will again make a success of the new investment and continue to grow the leading edge research base here in Wales.”
