Retrofit Gate Rudder Systems for Greener Vessel Propulsion

Wed, 01 June, 2022

TWI hosted a webinar for the collaborative GATERS project on 27 April 2002.

Principal project leader, Xing Sun was joined by Professor Emin Korkut, the Dean of the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Istanbul Technical University, and Professor Mehmet Atlar, Professor Noriyuki Sasaki, and Dr Batuhan Atkas from the University of Strathclyde for the webinar, which investigated ‘Greener Propulsion Using Retrofit Gate Rudder Systems,’ giving an overview and details of the latest developments in the project.

The GATERS project is working to design, manufacture and install a retrofit gate rudder system (GRS) before demonstrating the effectiveness of GRSs through sea trials and voyage monitoring.

The gate rudder system will improve energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions and, because it is designed to be retrofitted, it can be used on existing vessels.

TWI is one of 18 project partners from across Europe, and you can see a recording of the webinar, below:

The GATERS project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. Grant agreement 860337.
