Geo-Coat Project Paper Published in Materials Journal

Thu, 10 June, 2021

An academic paper related to work undertaken as part of the Geo-Coat Project has been published in the MDPI’s ‘Materials’ journal.

The paper, ‘Erosion and Corrosion Resistance Performance of Laser Metal Deposited High-Entropy Alloy Coatings at Hellisheidi Geothermal Site,’ was co-written by experts from TWI Ltd and the Innovation Centre Iceland.

The paper details work to investigate the use of corrosion-resistant coatings on geothermal process components, which are usually manufactured from low-alloy steels. The steels are prone to corrosion and erosion due to the corrosive chemical species and the high-velocity flow of geothermal fluids from geothermal power production.

Two newly developed laser metal deposited high-entropy alloy (LMD-HEA) coatings—CoCrFeNiMo0.85 and Al0.5CoCrFeNi – were applied to carbon and stainless steels, and tested in three different geothermal environments at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant in Iceland to see how durable they are under different conditions.

You can see the paper in full, online here.

The Geo-Coat project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 764086
