TWI Tests Inspection Techniques at Geothermal Field Site

Thu, 05 September, 2019

Condition and Structural Health Monitoring Project Leaders, Sofia Sampethai and Jialin Tang joined Ben Neal from PIL Ltd to test Acoustic Emission (AE) and Guided Wave (GW) inspection techniques at a geothermal field site in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

As with every other area of industry, geothermal requires techniques to locate, characterise, size and monitor flaws in all types of structures and components.

The two non-destructive testing techniques were tested for their ability to monitor the casing used within geothermal wells as part of the research funded by the collaborative Science for Clean Energy (S4CE) initiative under grant agreement number 764810.

This work built on past TWI and S4CE investigations into monitoring geothermal well casings.
