The Laser Processing Laboratory provides core laser technologies, including laser joining, decommissioning, surfacing and polymer processing. Specific areas of expertise cover laser-based joining, hybrid laser arc welding and laser brazing, as well as laser specialist cutting of metallic materials, non-additive laser surfacing and laser processing of ceramic and polymeric materials. Laboratory capabilities include state-of-the-art laser sources (fibre, diode, CO2, continuous wave and pulsed laser capabilities), robotic, XYZ, gantry manipulators (part sizes up to 10m), range of process heads (wire-fed, hybrid), process monitoring equipment and quality assurance (meam profiler, power meter).

Having been at the forefront of the use of lasers for materials processing since the mid-1960s, the work carried out here helps TWI provide world-leading support to many industries, including power, automotive, medical, electronics and sensors, shipbuilding and aerospace.
