We were pleased to invite representatives from TWI Industrial Member company, Rolls-Royce to our headquarters near Cambridge, UK, for a bespoke training session.
Three of our Principal Project Leaders - Derek Holiver, Tim Mitchell and Tom Pinto – combined their expertise and experience to deliver the training, which focused on electron beam (EB) welding.
EB welding offers a number of advantages for industry, including the highly repeatable, automated creation of high-quality welds. The process also offers versatility through the joining of a wide range of metals, including dissimilar metals with different melting points, high strength alloys and parts with complex shapes. The precision of the process also means that there is seldom any requirement for post-weld machining, reducing time and associated costs.
TWI has been active in EB technology research and development since the 1960s, including the deployment of established electron beam (EB) processes and technologies at a range of power levels, as well as the development of new capabilities for the benefit of our Industrial Members.

As with any technology, success requires unleashing the potential of our people. The first EBW diploma module led by our partners at TWI has paved the way for people with a non-welding background to get a firm, baseline understanding of electron beam welding. The candidates have all completed the module as noticeably broader, more aware welding engineers. Now it is over to me to ensure they combine this structured learning with Rolls-Royce’s own specialised technologies in the field of EBW! Thank you to TWI for delivering this course, and I look forward to sending more cohorts of not only welding engineers, but our neighbouring functions as well.”
