TWI Experts Attend Welding Institute Advancing Skills Event

Experts from TWI joined those from TWI Training and The Welding Institute for an event at TWI Technology Centre Middlesbrough dedicated to ‘Advancing Skills for Manufacturing and Inspection.’

The Professional Members’ event, which took place on 10 June, 2025, also welcomed a number of Industrial Member company representatives for a day of keynote presentations from TWI experts alongside those from a hand-picked selection of our partners from industry.

Speakers included our incoming Chair of Council, Claire Kimpton, Jamie Cater from MakeUK, Richard Humphries of Norton Projects, and Don Atkinson of The Welding Institute’s Teesside Branch.

TWI’s Director of Research and Quality Assurance, Paul Woollin, gave an introductory address about welding needs in the fusion sector and Interim Associate Director of Training and Examinations, Stephen Wisniewski spoke about the Skills Bootcamp designed to train the next generation skilled professionals as well as the TWI Virtual Academy.

Consultant Welding Engineer, Joanna Nicholas gave a presentation on STEM outreach and TWI Training Welding Inspection Programme Manager, David Bage spoke about CSWIP welding inspection. TWI’s NDT Group Manager, Michelle Forster, was also in attendance to present on ‘Advanced Inspection Methods to Increase Productivity in Industry.’

The day continued with a series of workshops tours and educational outreach activities, before concluding with a panel discussion around how The Welding Institute and partners can support education and upskilling in industry.

We were pleased to welcome 20 attendees to this limited numbers event, which brought together expertise from TWI, The Welding Institute and TWI Training, and we would like to thank everyone who attended or participated in making the day a success.
