TWI Consultant, Melissa Riley was called upon to add her expertise to a new collaborative policy document related to the use of metamaterials.

The document, ‘Unlocking the Potential of Metamaterials,’ was created by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the UK Metamaterials Network, and released on 1 December, 2025.

The report aims to elevate the profile of metamaterials and identify opportunities to maximise the social and economic benefits of this pioneering field of research. It covers a range of metamaterials as well as offering details on how to design and manufacture them. In addition, the report covers thematic application areas in health, sustainability, and space and aviation.

The report includes a number of recommendations aimed at academia, funding agencies, industry, government, and standards organisations, with messages to:

- Strengthen metamaterial research foundations

- Bridge metamaterial research to market

- Enable manufacturing and scale-up of metamaterials

- Develop skills and workforce for metamaterials

- Raise awareness of metamaterials and build standards

We are pleased to have been approached to add our expertise to the document, which once again demonstrates the technical excellence available at TWI, as well as how our knowledge and experience is called upon for the benefit of industry.
